Ο Ματίς είναι Γάλλος ζωγράφος, ιδρυτής του καλλιτεχνικού
κινήματος του Φοβισμού και μια από τις σημαντικότερες μορφές της Μοντέρνας
τέχνης.
Στα πρώτα του έργα φαίνεται επηρεασμένος από τα έργα των Σεζάν, Γκογκέν και Βαν Γκογκ αλλά και από
την παραδοσιακή ιαπωνική
τέχνη. Τα έργα του έχουν έντονα, φωτεινά χρώματα και η θεματολογία τους είναι προσωπογραφίες, εσωτερικοί χώροι και
νεκρές φύσεις. Ο Ματίς γνώρισε σημαντική καλλιτεχνική αναγνώριση με τα έργα της
περιόδου 1906-1917, τα οποία ξεφεύγουν από τα όρια του Φοβισμού. Συνδέθηκε
φιλικά με τον Πικάσο, με
το στοιχείο του δημιουργικού ανταγωνισμού να υπάρχει πάντα ανάμεσά τους. Τα
τελευταία χρόνια της ζωής του αναγκάστηκε να τα περάσει σε αναπηρική καρέκλα,
δεν εγκατέλειψε όμως το έργο του, αντιθέτως ασχολήθηκε με την τεχνική του κολάζ και σχεδιάζοντας με το ψαλίδι δημιούργησε
τα περίφημα «Paper Cuts».
