Ο Βαν Γκογκ είναι Ολλανδός
ζωγράφος που κατατάσσεται στον Μετα-Ιμπρεσιονισμό και θεωρείται ένας από τους
πατέρες της Μοντέρνας τέχνης και ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους ζωγράφους όλων των
εποχών.
Ήταν ο πρωτότοκος από τα οκτώ παιδιά της οικογένειας του πάστορα Θεόδωρου
Βαν Γκογκ. Από τα νεανικά του χρόνια παρουσίασε τάσεις μελαγχολίας. Σε ηλικία
16 ετών και αφού είχε καταπιαστεί, χωρίς επιτυχία, με αρκετά επαγγέλματα,
ασχολήθηκε με το εμπόριο έργων τέχνης σε μία εταιρία (Goupilator & Company), όπου αργότερα προσελήφθη και ο αδελφός του Τεό,
και πήγε στο Λονδίνο και το Παρίσι. Τότε ανέπτυξε ένα ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για
τη θρησκεία και αφού απολύθηκε, επέστρεψε στο Άμστερνταμ για να σπουδάσει
θεολογία. Κατόπιν του ανατέθηκε μία θέση ιεροκήρυκα στο Βέλγιο σε μια υποβαθμισμένη
περιοχή (Μπορινάζ), όπου λειτουργούσε ορυχείο και πολλοί άνθρωποι της περιοχής
δούλευαν σε αυτό. Ο Βαν Γκογκ κήρυξε εκεί δείχνοντας ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για
την ένδεια των ανθρώπων της περιοχής. Παράλληλα άρχισε να σχεδιάζει μικρά έργα.
Τα επόμενα χρόνια ταξιδεύοντας στην επαρχία, δημιουργεί έργα επηρεασμένα από τη
ζωγραφική του Ζαν Φρανσουά Μιγέ, εμνευσμένα όμως από τη φύση. Παρακολουθεί
μαθήματα στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Αντβέρπης, όπου γνωρίζει την ιαπωνική
τέχνη από την οποία δανείζεται πολλά στοιχεία. Την άνοιξη του 1886 επισκέπτεται το Παρίσι και
ζει με τον αδελφό του, επιτυχημένο πλέον έμπορο τέχνης. Έρχεται σε επαφή με
τους Ιμπρεσιονιστές και επηρεάζεται από αυτούς σε ό,τι αφορά τη χρήση του
χρώματος. Δύο χρόνια αργότερα επισκέπτεται την περιοχή της Προβηγκίας. Εκεί
εμπνέεται από το τοπίο και την αγροτική ζωή των κατοίκων, επινοεί μια ιδιαίτερη
τεχνική «τους στροβιλισμούς με το πινέλο»
ενώ στα έργα του χρησιμοποιεί έντονα και συμπληρωματικά χρώματα. Στην Αρλ ζει
για λίγο με τον ζωγράφο Γκογκέν, ωστόσο οι δυο τους διαφωνούν έντονα και λόγω
της ασταθούς ψυχικής του ισορροπίας, ο Βαν Γκογκ κόβει μέρος του αριστερού του
αυτιού καταλήγοντας στο νοσοκομείο της περιοχής. Το 1889 εισάγεται στο
ψυχιατρικό κέντρο του μοναστηριού του Αγίου Παύλου στον Σαιν Ρεμί, όπου
παραμένει για ένα περίπου χρόνο πάσχοντας από κατάθλιψη, συνεχίζει όμως να
ζωγραφίζει. Στη συνέχεις, ζει για ένα διάστημα κοντά στο Παρίσι, όπου
παρακολουθείται από τον γιατρό Πολ Γκασέ και ζωγραφίζει ένα μόνο έργο, την
προσωπογραφία του Γκασέ. Τον Ιούλιο του 1890 αυτοπυροβολείται στο στήθος και πεθαίνει
δυο ημέρες αργότερα σε ηλικία 37 ετών.
Σε διάστημα περίπου δέκα ετών, δημιούργησε περισσότερους από 800 πίνακες
και 1000 μικρότερα σχέδια. Μετά τον
θάνατό του, η φήμη του εξαπλώθηκε ραγδαία και έγιναν μεγάλες εκθέσεις έργων του
στο Παρίσι (1901), το Άμστερνταμ (1905), την Κολονία (1912), τη Νέα Υόρκη
(1913) και το Βερολίνο (1914). Σημαντική θεωρείται η αλληλογραφία με τον αδελφό
του, που περιλαμβάνει περισσότερα από 700 γράμματα, στα οποία μιλάει για την
τέχνη του.
