Ο Μανέ είναι Γάλλος ζωγράφος του 19ου αιώνα
και θεωρείται από τους «πατέρες» της Μοντέρνας τέχνης.
Καταγόταν από μεγαλοαστική οικογένεια που τον ήθελε να σπουδάζει στη νομική
αλλά μετά το ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον που έδειξε για τη ζωγραφική, το αποδέχτηκαν.
Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του συνήθιζε να αντιγράφει έργα κλασικών
δημιουργών και να κάνει πολλά ταξίδια, επισκεπτόμενος άλλους καλλιτέχνες και
μουσεία. Όταν το 1863 εκτέθηκε το έργο του «Πρόγευμα στη χλόη», που απεικονίζει
μια γυμνή γυναικεία μορφή σε μια καθημερινή σκηνή μαζί με άντρες στην εξοχή,
προκλήθηκε σάλος για προσβολή της δημοσίας αιδούς. Δυο χρόνια μετά όταν
εκτέθηκε το έργο του «Ολυμπία», με μια γυμνή γυναικεία μορφή ξαπλωτή και δίπλα της μια έγχρωμη υπηρέτρια, έγινε
ακόμα μεγαλύτερο σκάνδαλο. Παρά τις αρνητικές κριτικές που δεχόταν, ο Μανέ είχε
σημαντική επιρροή στους καλλιτεχνικούς κύκλους και συνδέθηκε ιδιαίτερα με τους
Ιμπρεσιονιστές, χωρίς όμως να εκθέσει μαζί τους. Υπηρέτησε ως ανθυπολοχαγός
στον Γαλλο-Πρωσικό πόλεμο το 1870 και παρασημοφορήθηκε. Πέθανε 51 ετών.
