Ο Κουρμπέ είναι Γάλλος ζωγράφος του 19ου
αιώνα, από τους πρωτεργάτες του Ρεαλισμού.
Υποστήριξε τη δημιουργική ελευθερία του καλλιτέχνη και προώθησε τις
εκθέσεις των Ιμπρεσιονιστών. Πίστευε πως στη ζωγραφική πρέπει να εικονίζονται
μόνο υπαρκτά θέματα και όπως έλεγε «δεν μπορώ να ζωγραφίσω έναν άγγελο, γιατί
δεν έχω δει ποτέ κανέναν». Έτσι, μεγάλο μέρος του έργου του έχει ως
θέμα την αγροτική ζωή, κάτι που δεν ήταν συνηθισμένο στην εποχή του, αλλά και
το γυμνό σώμα παρουσιασμένο χωρίς εξιδανικεύσεις και μυθολογικές αναφορές. Πήρε
μέρος στη Γαλλική Κομμούνα του 1871, όμως με το τέλος της συνελήφθη, οι πίνακές
του δημεύτηκαν και εξορισμένος πέθανε στην Ελβετία 58 ετών.
