Ο Μαγκρίτ είναι Βέλγος καλλιτέχνης του Ντανταϊσμού και του Σουρεαλισμού.

Σπούδασε στη Βασιλική Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών των Βρυξελλών, δούλεψε σε εργοστάσιο ταπετσαρίας, όπου σχεδίαζε αφίσες και διαφημίσεις μέχρι το 1926, όταν, υπογράφοντας συμβόλαιο με την Galerie la Centaure των Βρυξελλών, ασχολήθηκε αποκλειστικά με τη ζωγραφική. Στην πρώτη του έκθεση στις Βρυξέλλες το 1927, οι κριτικοί του επιτέθηκαν και απογοητευμένος μετακόμισε στο Παρίσι, όπου γνώρισε τον Αντρέ Μπρετόν και έγινε μέλος της ομάδας των Σουρεαλιστών. Κατά τη γερμανική κατοχή του Βελγίου στον Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, αποκήρυξε τη βία και την απαισιοδοξία των προηγουμένων έργων του. Είναι ένας αριστοτεχνικός ζωγράφος που στα έργα του παραθέτει συνηθισμένα αντικείμενα μέσα σε κάποιο ασυνήθιστο πλαίσιο, δίνοντας νέες ερμηνείες σε αυτά. Το έργο του είναι πνευματώδες και διασκεδαστικό. Ο ίδιος περιέγραψε τα έργα του «Η ζωγραφική μου είναι ορατές εικόνες που δεν κρύβουν κάτι, προκαλούν μυστήριο και, πράγματι, όταν κάποιος βλέπει έναν από τους πίνακές μου, θέτει στον εαυτό του αυτήν την απλή ερώτηση «Tι σημαίνει αυτό;» Οι πίνακές μου δεν σημαίνουν κάτι, επειδή και το μυστήριο δεν σημαίνει κάτι, είναι απλά άγνωστο.»

Πέθανε σε ηλικία 69 ετών.
